Private Devotionals

These pieces are inspired by prayer altars that date from the 12th to 16th century Italian and Byzantine art. I first encountered them on trips to Rome, Florence and Turkey. I was struck by the power embodied in such small pieces. These small alters were typically the size of a book for portability.

These “private devotionals” are my interpretation and homage to those powerful altars. I use a wide range of sources, ranging from people and events meaningful in my personal life, to classic religious paintings and even fashion magazines.

I am fascinated by the way simple graphic symbols can stir our emotions and how their meanings can change with time. The human body is probably the most powerful and complex of all symbols because we live with and are surrounded by it every day.
